Random Headcanon:

One of the reasons Hira takes Garrus’s last name is that she doesn’t like the hype about hers. She doesn’t like being in the public eye, because people expect celebrities to act a certain way and then she gets crap from Alliance PR for not playing nice and it distracts from her job. So she takes the surname Vakarian and disappears from the public eye and everyone’s left going “Where’s Shepard? Where’d our hero go?” and no one in the little tropical colony goes “Oh my gosh, my neighbor is THE Commander Shepard!”
